Makoto Naegi, a youngster with no exceptional aptitude, is startled to find that he has been admitted into Hope's Peak Private Academy, an elite school that attracts the brightest students from a variety of areas. Despite his belief that his admittance was a fluke, Naegi is overjoyed to be attending a school that is famed for assuring the success of its graduates. He enters the elite academy's main doors, determined. However, after losing consciousness inside, Naegi awakens in what appears to be an abandoned classroom. Naegi, unable to fathom how he arrived, proceeds to investigate and, to his astonishment, discovers his classmates gathered in the gym. While everyone is attempting to figure out what occurred, the school principal—Monokuma, a robotic teddy bear—approaches them.
